Counselor's Corner: Back to School Night

This night provides your child with several transition opportunities. You will meet your child's teacher(s) and complete registration process for school. Several forms will need to be completed in order to provide a safe and easier transition for the first day of school and the rest of the year. Parents will be able to provide correct demographic information for transportation and emergency issues. Teachers will need a couple of forms completed for the school year in order to provide medication and go on field trips. Cafeteria personnel will be available to assist families with account information and forms.

Homework: Learning is your child's responsibility

How did your desire to help your kids make them think that their schoolwork was your responsibility. Put the responsibility for learning back where it belongs - on your children.
Problems arise when parents aren't involved and are over-involved with their children's learning. To change this balance, hold your child accountable for his actions.
Does he wait until the very last minute to start a project?
What do you do when he tells you he needs to make a trip to the store right now for a project due tomorrow? Your child has to learn the consequences of his behavior. Your child may learn an important lesson about putting things off until the last minute. By holding your child accountable, you help him learn that actions do have consequences.

Screenings

Kindergarten registration provides screening in the areas of speech/language, cognitive, fine motor, and hearing. Staff are trained to implement screening tools such as Dibels and the DIAL-3.
Vision and hearing screenings are conducted in September each year. Students in grades 1, 2, and 3 receive hearing screenings, while students in grades 3 and 5 receive vision screenings. Students in Tier 3 also receive vision/hearing screenings.
Reading and math screenings are implemented for every student in the school. Interventions are provided daily for those students indicating the need on these screenings. Screenings instruments include Dibels and Aimsweb.
Scoliosis screening is provided for each 6th grade student.

Transfer students

The proper documents need to be provided to ensure the easiest transition to a new school.
Certified Birth Certificate - Many confuse this with the certificate of live birth issued by the hospital, however, most states issue certificates. Forms are available at the school if a student needs a birth certificate.
A copy of social security card
Current Kentucky immunization certificate -6th graders must have a current tetanus shot.
Physical exam
Vision exam
Proof of residency - Residency Verification form indicates that parent must provide the school with proof of residency indicating that the parent is receiving a service at this location. If renting then the landlord must sign this form.
